Assessing the Potential of Ageratum conyzoides in Constructed Wetlands for Treating Domestic Wastewater

Limited freshwater sources present a challenging opportunity for reuse of Treated wastewater in agriculture. HOWEVER there are limitations related to icts reuse Such As accumulation of salts (high sodium happy) and bad odor. The present study quantified the potential of subsurface flow constructed wetlands (treatment capacity 2.8 m3 per day) with vegetated wetland plant species Namely ageratum conyzoides , Typha latifolia and Canna indica for bio-treatment of domestic wastewater. The novelty of this study is the introduction of ageratum conyzoides FOR TREATING domestic wastewater. The constructed wetlands Were monitored for quality and quantity of influential and effluents, plant biomass, plant contaminant contaminant uptake and accumulation in filter bed of wetland (coarse sand). Results Showed reduction in chemical oxygen demand (73%), ammonical nitrogen (32%), total suspended solids (97%) and phosphate (25%). The nutrient accumulation in coarse sand Was 100 fold lower Compared to the uptake of three plant species. The ageratum conyzoides HAD Highest nitrogen and phosphate removal Followed By Canna indica, while the Typha latifolia EXHIBITED greatest sulfur removal. The three wetland plant species Were harvested to Enhance Their nutrient uptake Among the three species and the Typha latifolia Showed The Highest growth rate (115 g / m2 / day). These results highlight the important role of wetland plant species for treatment of domestic wastewater. For design of constructed wetlands, different plant species can be selected based on the level of the contaminant Desired treatment. Also the lessons Learnt from this study will be helpful in designing --other constructed wetlands in the watersheds at the local scale.
